2023-2024 Nursing and Healthcare House Bills
The following are the major nursing and healthcare bills that have been drafted and introduced by the House.
HR 2530
To amend the Public Health Service Act to establish direct care registered nurse-to-patient staffing ratio requirements in hospitals. This bill was introduced in the House on 4/6/21 by Janice Schakowsky (Rep of Illinois). This is similar to the Senate bill, it just amends the current law to establish ratios nationwide. It was sent to two House Committees, The Committee on Energy and Commerce and the Committee on Ways and Means.
HR 2411
National Nursing Workforce Center Act of 2023. This bill aims to stabilize the existing nursing workforce, and establish programs to increase the numbers of nurses. This bill was introduced in the House on 3/30/23 by Lisa Blunt Rochester (Dem of Delaware). It was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on the same day.
HR 2584
Safety From Violence for Healthcare Employees Act or SAVE Act. This holds those that commit an act of violence or intimidation against healthcare workers accountable. An act of intimidation that prevents any healthcare worker from carrying out their normal duties will result in the perpetrator receiving a fine and/or a 10-year jail sentence. If the act of violence or intimidation involves the use of a weapon, it will result in a fine and a 20-year jail sentence. However, there is no verbiage that will prevent the act from happening in the first place, in short, hospitals and administration still have no accountability in protecting us. This bill was introduced on 04/13/2023 and referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary.
